designboom partners with WALLPAPER* magazine to announce the winners of the 2016 WALLPAPER* DESIGN AWARDS highly anticipated judges’ awards. each year an esteemed panel of creative high achievers are invited by WALLPAPER* to nominate international projects and design protagonists across 11 categories — from best domestic design to best new public building — that have made headlines in the creative industry over the past 12 months.

this year the renowned WALLPAPER* DESIGN AWARDS judges included industrial designers konstantin grcic and patricia urquiola, along with architect david adjaye, who together selected the cream of the crop — those works that celebrate the world’s most exciting and provocative architecture, products, creations and innovations — with top prize given to ronan and erwan bouroullec as ‘designers of the year’.

konstantin grcic on awarding ronan and erwan bouroullec ‘designers of the year’: ‘all of the contenders were great. but the bouroullec brothers have done such fantastic work over such a long period of time, they deserve it just a little bit more than the others. they’ve been going at it for 15 years, always at the top level. it’s incredible.’

‘it was very easy for me. they did a fantastic job this year,’ said patricia urquiola of the decision.

‘their designs not only refine, but enrich the everyday experience through an acute observation of it,’ concluded david adjaye.

the judges also named the bouroullec’s ‘serif’ TV for samsung as the ‘best domestic design of the year’, while OMA’s fondazione prada in milan was given the title of ‘best new public building’, and ‘apple watch Hermès’ by apple and Hermès named ‘life enhancer of the year’.
