take a virtual step inside the interactive design miami/ 2020

design miami/ has returned to the miami design district — the home of its first ever fair — for its sixteenth edition from november 27 – december 6. the 2020 edition is staged as a new curated selling exhibition concept, design miami/podium — a new flexible typology that comprises individual pieces and reformatted larger presentations by major galleries. the program features both gallery and studio participation, with access for individual designers and galleries alike. new digital formats give visitors near and far the ability to search and shop pieces from the physical fair online, and also digitally navigate the event in 3D, exploring the exhibition and individual objects up close.

the inaugural design miami/podium exhibition is housed across four floors of the historic moore building in the miami design district, which surround ‘elastika’ — the striking architectural intervention by zaha hadid. the featured exhibition explores the theme america(s), and looks at the meaning of america through the juxtaposition of significant works of design and craft. under the curation of aric chen, highlights include a navajo wedge weave blanket presented by shiprock santa fe; a collection of very rare painted shaker boxes from john keith russell; and important twentieth century works by george nakashima, wendell castle, charles eames, and eero saarinen.

the exhibition also includes designs from across latin america and further afield, as well as a diverse selection of contemporary designs. many of these constitute underrepresented voices and explore social and political themes from black lives matter, to gender and environmental issues.

furthermore, using 3D software, visitors can interactively explore the exhibition in its real-world space, with everything available for purchase. virtual visitors can simply hover over any object within the moore building space to reveal details and pricing information, and complete the transaction as easily as if they were at the fair in person.
