with over 100 events, the vienna design week (VDW) is once again showcases an extensive collection of artworks and events. the program features a diverse and multi-layered series of design activities and cultural happenings. the festival headquarters this year is situated in the 4th district, located in an old school building which will see former class rooms enlivened with exhibitions and presentations, a pop-up café, and workshop laboratory inviting visitors to interact with creatives.

a platform for design
realized in cooperation with many partners–from cultural institutions, manufacturers, to independent creatives–the entire city is set to become a platform and showplace of design. devoid of having the character of a trade fair, VDW instead offers a variety of venues and approaches that are specific to the austrian capital. the festival sets out to be ‘international but localized’, with an abiding interest to cooperate with the flourishing design scenes of central and eastern europe, and beyond, which sees the even engaging in an important international creative exchange.

time for experiments
the 2013 VDW program emphasizes creative and production process, encouraging the participation of visitors through a host of workshops, where they can interact with exhibiting creatives by asking questions or actually engaging in their own experimental work. the exploration of materials, mood values and the interaction between people and objects lie at the centre of design practice and consequently are important points of reference within vienna design week.

international festival and viennese culture event

with exhibitions, venue-specific installations, theme specials, discussion events, a programme of films and, of course, enough opportunity to party and network, VDW is not only an attraction for the international design scene, but has also been curated to interest and appeal to the broader viennese community and visitors to vienna. this year vienna design week energetically goes into the sixth round taking up a firm place on the international festival scene while being a fixed early-autumn cultural event in vienna.

the aim of vienna design week is to show and enable people to experience the many-faceted creative work in the fields of product, furniture and industrial design as well as experimental design. after six successful festivals yet another exquisite and colourful programme of events will be awaiting the visitors in october 2013. design has been and is an important field in the production of culture: it shapes our material culture, our everyday life and our consumer world, it influences our lifestyles and fashions and most fundamentally our aesthetic sense and judgements. this wide-ranging impact is a reason both to celebrate design and to examine it critically, and vienna design week has made both of these its mission.
