US space force officially unveils new logo and motto

earlier this year, donald trump, the president of the united states, unveiled the new seal of the US space force — a branch of the US armed forces that was established in december, 2019. many noted the similarities between the seal and the starfleet insignia from star trek, including actor george takei, one of the show’s stars. now, with the revealing of the US space force’s official logo and motto, the agency has explained its design and the significance of each element.

according to the US space force, the symbol was first used in 1961 and is intended to honor the heritage of the united states air force and space command. the silver outer border on the delta signifies defense and protection, while the black area inside embodies the ‘vast darkness of deep space’.

an explanation of the logo’s design

the two spires inside the delta represent the action of a rocket launching, with the ‘polaris’ star centrally positioned — symbolizing ‘how the core values guide the space force mission’. finally, the four beveled elements at the base of the logo represent the joint armed forces supporting the space mission: air force, army, navy, and marines. meanwhile, the official motto reads ‘semper supra’, meaning ‘always above’. see designboom’s previous coverage of the logo and seal here.
