located in the heart of malasaña district, madrid, a gastro space ‘la colmada’ — which is both a bar and a shop —  tries to retrieve and update the concept of the old crowded neighborhood. spanish multidisciplinary practice ultramarina.studio has restyled and rejuvenated the appearance of the spot to adapt it to the public and the location.

‘these days people are asking for spaces of this kind, with traditional home-cooked products and certain attachment to the neighborhood,’ says alejandro abades, the co-owner of la colmada. inspired by the local patterns, ultramarina.studio’s design aims at being relevant at all times.

the graphics are not only based on the local spirit but also the products served in la colmada — their shapes are a vital part of the space and dishes. to add more fun into the monochrome theme, the studio pained the entrance in blue referring to the sea, while the second area is in green tones, which brings the visitors back to the countryside and nature.
