bureau sebastian moock completes ‘the queer archaeology’
From typography and graphics, to editorial layout, Bureau Sebastian Moock has completed the book design for The Queer Archaeology anthology. The project brings together a kaleidoscope of different perspectives that trace the scientification of archaeology and art history that began around 250 years ago with Johan Joachim Winckelman.
The book brings together 22 international collaborations, organized into five topical sections. Uniting these broad viewpoints and nuanced themes, Bureau Sebastian Moock sets new book design standards. Not only do the color contributions break the contrast with the black-and-white cover, but the type area is also historically based on Winkelmann’s time and presented in a modern and contemporary expression.

charting history through contemporary type and graphics
With the inclusion of queer studies and gender research, the perspectives of 22 authors open up alternative but by no means mutually exclusive viewpoints on the archaeology of the history of science. Across five sections, each chapter of The Queer Archaeology discusses aspects of gender identity through the lenses of ancient and prehistoric archaeology, Egyptology, art history, and comparative literature. At the same time, seeking to broaden its views, the book invites ‘qu(e)erthoughts’ to expand on the historic notions and brush the topic against the grain from a cross-gender perspective.
