tom sachs punctuates circular holes throughout limited gray edition of shop chair

best known for his works inspired by icons of modernism and design, artist tom sachs has been making one-off pieces as part of his sculptural practice for more than 30 years. by using modest studio materials, the artist fabricates parallel universes that come together through semi-functional sculptures. for the 2019 edition of frieze new york, tom sachs continues his collaboration with salon 94 design to bring his iconic shop chair in a new and sleek colorway — gray.

in groups, as pairs, or even as a single piece, tom sach’s gray shop chair exclusive for salon 94 design is fully assembled in maple and plywood with a water-based lacquer, rubber flex-mounts, and stainless steel screws. available in a limited series of 200 — although already sold out — the shop chair has been hand-engraved and sequentially-numbered with a plate. overall, the seating object represents the artist’s playful yet functional approach to art as a useable and practical object.

for frieze new york 2019, sachs also created salon 94 design’s booth where a large scale marquetry painting of family guy welcomes guests. this is an exemplary of the artist’s interest in combining popular icons with a handcrafted aesthetic. on show, booth visitors will be able to appreciate the shop chair as well as a model sixty one, a revamped boombox fully equipped with a machete.
