curved contours define thomas sandell's goma chair collection for made by choice

made by choice has collaborated with architect and designer, thomas sandell of sandellsandberg, on goma, a collection comprising a chair, armchair and bar stool. part of the new collaborations presented by the finnish brand during stockholm furniture fair 2020, goma combines a strong design language with flowing, curved contours that attribute a playful character to its appearance. ‘I wanted to do it with simple lines,’ sandell tells designboom. ‘like those that kids do when they draw. and you can do that with this chair because it has chunky proportions, and so it’s strong enough, otherwise you would need extra support.’all images courtesy of made by choice and thomas sandell

‘I’m doing a restaurant in stockholm, which actually going to be called goma, and I needed a bar stool so I contacted them and asked if they could it,’ explains thomas sandell when asked about the origins of his collaboration with made by choice. ‘I try to design my own furniture for my projects, as much as the clients let me to.’ from the bar stool, the collection has now expanded to into a chair and armchair, all of which are characterized by a strong frame of bent plywood.

the chair’s strong frame and flowing contours contribute to its dominant presence in any room, while the color red certainly makes the armchair stand out even further. ‘why red?’ we ask sandell. ‘I did a sketch, and we wanted to make it exactly like the sketch,’ he explains. ‘so because I happened to have a red pencil at my desk, we decided to do it in red!’
