programmed paper draws on the mechanisms of pine cones

TAKT PROJECT’s programmed PAPER leverages the inherent warping nature of paper to invent novel design possibilities utilizing UV silk screen printing. Inspired by the mechanism of pine cones, which adjust their scales to open and close in response to humidity changes, the project employs a similar principle to program paper warping. PASCO was chosen for the substrate paper, for its optimal properties responding to humidity and one side was coated with UV screen printing to program specific warping behaviors into the paper. By adjusting factors such as paper width and joint size, the design team can create large spaces within the paper, enhancing its versatility.

takt project manipulates inherent paper grains for unique forms

The core idea behind programmed PAPER stems from embracing paper’s natural tendency to warp. Unlike conventional approaches that view warping as a flaw, the design team is oriented toward an approach that maximizes the property. Paper warps. Paper appears uniform, but it actually warps in a specific direction. While inconvenient when using paper as a flat material, the small space created by the bend hints that something could be wrapped inside,’ notes TAKT PROJECT.

Further, by manipulating the grain of the paper in conjunction with UV silk printing, a variety of programs can be devised, dictating the direction and size of warping. The process results in the formation of unique shapes and structures, such as the distinctive lemon-shaped basket influenced by the paper’s grain. By integrating considerations such as arm length and paper grain direction, TAKT PROJECT also engineers packaging shapes that envelop and protect items from all angles.

programmed PAPER was presented at TAKEO PAPER SHOW themed PACKAGING: Function and Laughter, in Japan in 2023. Held since 1965, the paper and design exhibition delves into spotlighting various perspectives of the material, exploring its meaning and value in collaboration with leading designers.
