studio edwards inserts adaptive yellow-framed work pods into sackville studio, melbourne

inserted within an existing warehouse, studio edwards creates a series of flexible workspaces in sackville studios in melbourne, australia. here, four modular, yellow steel-framed pods provide an office that can be easily removed, transformed and adapted to changing needs and requirements. a large, central capsule can even be rolled into new positions whilst each pod’s wooden panels can be slid open, closed or removed entirely.

as a leased warehouse, studio edwards created sackville studios to be simply inserted into the space and easily removed post-tenancy. this directive led to the idea of a series of flexible workspaces that were designed with minimal interference to the fabric of the existing building. the result defines four adaptive pods for work, and a large space in between for group interaction.

the four yellow-framed pods are fabricated from steel components that can be bolted together by hand. in fact, they can be dis-assembled and re-located whenever required. each can accommodate groups of up to four people. the capsules are lined with white-painted panels of OSB timbers, which can be slid back and forth to let in natural lighting as well as fresh air. translucent roller blinds on the front of each space can be rolled down for more privacy when needed. strip lighting then lines the ceiling beams and can be changed in hue for different events.

as well as all the space inside, sackville studios features a large area adjacent to the street for shared meeting space or events. a central pod, which has castors on the feet of its frame, can be rolled and moved around the office as well as outside to the street area.
