the stilnovo ‘valigia’, designed by ettore sottsass, is back. the iconic lamp returns to the manufacturer’s catalogue from the wilderness in a design faithful to the red and black original from 1977. the fun, versatile design can be picked up and carried to its next spot. it represents a symbolic invitation to travel, which is hopeful for a time when we can once again globe-trot.

ironic and informal, the stilnovo ‘valigia’ by ettore sottsass was conceived to be taken anywhere, for any use, and for any setting. from its four rounded feet, two bearing arches in red piping rise up and wrap around the top of a molded metal vault. these arches are connected to the vault which contains the light inside. it appears as if a monumental architecture piece without precise confines. a small arched handle then sits atop, ready to be picked up single-handedly and moved on a whim.

with a design faithful to the original, the lamp is a beloved classic of the designer. its red and black shades represent a typical color combination used by ettore sottsass. in fact, ‘valigia’ is the fifth lamp he designed for silnovo after the ‘ortros’, ‘lampros’ and ‘manifesto’ in 1968, ‘sinus’ in 1973, and ‘don’ in 1977.
