rock climbing-inspired stainless steel ‘cling’ stool

Junho Kang designs a stainless steel stool named Cling with a carabiner and rope, inspired by traditional rock climbing. The chair has three legs to hold the person’s weight evenly. The surface, still steel, forms a soft triangular shape with three rounded sides. The designer says that he gets the idea of the three legs and their slit styles from the shape of the hands. When rock climbers crawl up, their fingers bend as they claw the surface. The spaces between their fingers show up as a design feature in the steel stool, staying true to the rock climbing spirit.

For the shape of Cling, the steel stool bears irregular curves and straight lines throughout. Junho Kang says they refer to the varying and natural forms of the rock surfaces. When viewed from the side or at a lower level, it’s evident that there are two plates forming the steel stool inspired by rock climbing. The upper and lower surfaces then hold the hook of the three legs between them to stabilize the chair and keep it from being shaky.

Carabiner and ropes can produce object ‘hangers’

Around the legs of the steel stool inspired by rock climbing, Junho Kang screws in two hoops on each. The serve purpose for the carabiner and rope, which are two tools used for climbing. Below the chair, there’s another hoop hidden in plain sight. Here, the user hooks their carabiner. The purpose of this is to create a ‘hanger.’ When the user ties the rope around one of the legs’ hoops and clips the carabiner below the steel stool, they can use the rock climbing-inspired chair to hang objects.

This means the design can carry reusable water bottles or even books and magazines while the user is sitting on it. Because there are hoops throughout the steel stool, users can add more carabiners and ropes around it and create their own spider-web-like hangers. The seat comprises entirely steel parts, aside from the rope. In this case, users can even customize the shape of the stool’s surface. If they’re not fans of the soft triangular one, they can make it more circular, like the traditional ones, or even sharper, closer to the shape of a triangle.
