young-jae lee is a korean potter who is currently presenting her ‘spindle vases’ at the pinakothek der moderne. lee’s work focuses on themes about variations on a sole design form. living and working in germany for the past thirty years, lee’s pottery makes reference to the traditional receptacles of ancient korea, where two bowls, made separately, are joined together in a way which is similar to placing the open palm of one hand over another. this technique results in a spindle-shaped contour with an enclosed hollow space. through the process and the resulting form, lee links the pursuit in harmony of joining the two bowls in pure harmony of color and form.
