an exclusive look at the ‘aria infinita’ piece

Milan Design Week 2023: For its tenth anniversary with Zaha Hadid Design, lighting brand SLAMP will present ARIA INFINITA at Salone’s 2023 edition of Euroluce. Undulating and warping across space, this new lighting piece clearly articulates Zaha Hadid’s signature style: sinuous lines and bold shapes encoded within a powerful and scenographic expressive charge. Indeed, ARIA INFINITA goes beyond traditional lighting concepts by giving rise to a modular installation; starting from a minimum extension of three meters, the luminous object can, ideally, be replicated indefinitely.

The collaboration between SLAMP and the late Zaha Hadid initially materialized in 2013 as ARIA and AVIA, a signature project characterized by an aptitude for experimentation — namely, the versatile applications of technopolymers, the base material of all SLAMP designs. With such versatility, the lighting brand distinguishes itself with an organic aesthetic, in which fluid and complex forms often define imposing yet incredibly lightweight pieces.

The partnership with Zaha Hadid was born from a brilliant intuition of Nigel Coates who was Art Director of Slamp at the time and a friend of the architect. He invited her to imagine a project for us,’ says Luca Mazza, General Manager of SLAMP. ‘This encounter marked a very important moment for us, consolidating the dialogue with the more visionary world of contemporary architecture. ARIA INFINITA is our way of paying tribute to Zaha’s revolutionary presence, her charisma, and her ability to look at things in such a radical way.’

a sinusoidal wave exuding lightness

The ARIA and AVIA lighting sculptures, created ten years ago, are precisely the starting point for ARIA INFINITA. The sheets that follow one other in the structure are the same ones that now harmoniously assume imposing formats, creating a large white and gold sinusoidal wave. Made and assembled manually through a tailoring process, the sheets – 3 mm thick each – are positioned around a luminous body made of Lentiflex, exuding a poetic and glowing vitality that lends dynamism and elegance to any space.

‘ARIA INFINITA seems to float with intrinsic lightness in a wide movement. Thanks to a careful study of density and light perception, its light changes and evolves according to the point of observation, fascinating anyone who looks at it,’ writes SLAMP.
