a rough sketch of plans by the abu dhabi urban planning council

because of its projected threefold population growth, abu dhabi urban planning council is planning to create a second city centre to accommodate the growth of 1,000,000 to 3,000,000 people by 2030. the location for the new capital city district is on the mainland in an area known as khlaifa c. by building a second city centre, the hope is for the population to move outwards from the congested centre, located in the north eastern part of the abu dhabi island, and into city’s outer suburbs which are currently low density areas. with this development it is thought that by 2030, the organization and use of the land will change and feel more like a city. with concerns about transportation and mobility, a new transport infrastructure will be developed as part of the plan to connect the city centre with the capital city district, ensuring equal movement between the main areas. the goal is to create a city which houses mixed-use, pedestrian friendly streets, cost effective housing, with an overall concern for sustainability and appreciation for the natural environment.
