samuel wilkinson unveils shape-shifting candelabra for lobmeyr

zymbel is a solid brass candleholder by london-based designer samuel wilkinson for austrian artisan lobmeyr. the idea behind this unusual looking piece is to create a candle holder that would reflect and amplify the glow from a single candle with a bit of theatrical zest and shape-shifting qualities. by doing so, lighting and colors come together to create different effects and impressions.

the solid brass discs pivot via a hidden axis

set to be exhibited at the international contemporary furniture fair in new york (ICFF), samuel wilkinson‘s zymbel candelabra are all handmade by lobmeyr‘s skilled crafstmen. with all parts constructed from solid brass, the form is based on four shifting discs whose composition can be changed as desired — moving around a candle in a spherical space. the weighted base allows the other three discs to cantilever up and around the candle, producing a gravity defying appearance. all faces are highly polished, apart from two which have also been rubbed with oil to produce a rich and contrasting darkened surface.
