robert stadler: back in 5 minutes
MAK design salon, vienna
on now until november 30th, 2014

the design salon of the museum of applied arts (MAK) in vienna serves as a stage for highlights the thematic relationship between the past and the present, encouraging a dialogue that encompasses multiple eras, while also opening up new perspectives on creativity. each year a creative is commissioned to develop an installation that engages and temporarily transforms the historic biedermeier interiors of the building into a laboratory of the new. the 2014 program sees robert stadler playing on the way in which the empire-style atmosphere can be altered by means of lightweight furniture, that depending on the given situation, can be arranged into functional islands that permit uses for eating, reading, music-making in one and the same room.

‘back in 5 minutes’ is the paris-based designer’s reinterpretation of the former rural summer villa’s rustic rooms in which he has integrated ‘working furniture’ including stools and benches, to contrast the fundamentally bourgeois and opulent leisure idyll expressed within. stadler retains the motifs and patterns of the biedermeier period with his intervention, but his process gives rise to in-between phenomenon which makes the altered space appear as if it has been reconfigured on its own.
