first prototyped back in 2016, marleen kaptein has developed the ‘recycled carbon’ chair to be ready for production. the initiative creates something beautiful from an indestructible material, which is neither degradable nor easily recycled. carbon fiber is commonly used for aircraft and car parts, sports equipment and musical instruments but, even more worryingly, 30% of produced carbon becomes waste during the manufacturing process alone.

LABEL/BREED tasked marleen kaptein to continue working with a group of aerospace engineers at NLR – the dutch aerospace center – and produce an even more pure design. the latest result not only increases the chair to 96% made from recycled carbon but also to one able to be mass-produced. the other 4% is the carbon fiber tape used for the backrest and seat. the former is made uniquely by a robot, ensuring that each design features an individual pattern.

LABEL/BREED now hope that their sustainable initiative can reach full production. their kickstarter campaign aims to help raise funding to create the manufacturing moulds needed.
