prada and AMO take cues from science fiction with fall/winter 2022 menswear show

prada’s FUTURISTIC metascape

for its fall/winter 2022 menswear collection, prada works with OMA/AMO to stage a theatrical runway show, taking cues from a cinematic space age. the team at prada envisioned the event as an interruption of reality, having an ‘idealized, fantasized, aesthetic vernacular.’ the show, by miuccia prada and raf simons, took place at the deposito of the fondazione prada in milan. 

reimagining the renovated space as a ‘stage for action,’ the team covered the floor in olive green carpeting and occupied the room with rows of plush theater seating. at the start of the runway — demarcated by a zigzagging lighting scheme — is an otherworldly tunnel of blue neon and metal grating — a clear reference to the spacecraft interior created by stanley kubrick for 2001: a space odyssey.

a cinematic interpretation of reality

to continue its cinematic theme, prada (see more here) and OMA/AMO (see more here) included hollywood actors to model the FW22 menswear collection. the show began with kyle maclachlan, and closed with jeff goldblum. the team at prada tells designboom: ‘actors are interpreters of reality, employed to echo truth through their portrayals… real men, recognized figures, they bring a new facet of reality.’

as prada notes: ‘garments exemplify a constructed modernism, their inherent architecture serving to define shape and form. the body is given emphasis, shoulders and waist delineated through traditional tailoring, a silhouette then transmuted to everyday garments, the two disciplines not only juxtaposed but brought together as one.

‘through fabrication and methodology, an equal gravity is given to each genre of clothing — every facet of reality is offered significance, a sophistication and esteem, a lasting value.’
