polaroid has revealed the new 3D printing ‘candyplay’ pen, that lets you draw actual edible pieces of candy. by replacing extruded plastic with melted candy, the pen allows doodlers to create unique three-dimensional masterpieces and then …eat them.

out of the box, the ‘candyplay’ 3D pen by polaroid comes with four candy cartridges that are used as edible printing material. users can pick from a selection of six different sweet flavors, (strawberry, orange, apple, grape, lemon, and cola) that are all sugar-free.

the new 3D pen by polaroid seems pretty easy-to-use: you plug it in, wait for an LED to tell you that the heating mechanism is warm enough, and then press the single red button to extrude the sticky material intermittently, or set it to flow freely. the resulting creation is completely up to the doodler’s imagination and skill level, but polaroid suggests starting with some helpful traceable stencils that are available for download on its site, so that beginners get accustomed to how the pen works.

the polaroid ‘candyplay’ 3D pen is not an entirely new concept; 3D printers that extrude edible material instead of plastic have already been introduced to the world of design. what makes this product stand out is that it is entirely freehand, allowing anyone to start drawing immediately, without having to learn any software or prepare a 3D model first.
