marking his entry into the universe of space design, philippe starck has conceived the interiors for the habitation module of axiom’s first space tourism program. axiom space is a privately-owned space exploration company that will fly individuals on expeditions to the international space station in 2020. starck’s vision for the capsule was to create a nest-like environment that would include textures, materials, and colors sourced from the fetal world.

‘a space station is ruled by a fundamental law: zero gravity,’ starck says. ‘unlike terrestrial life constraints, life in space is a multi-directional freedom. my vision is to create a comfortable egg, friendly, where walls are so soft and in harmony with the values of movements of the human body in zero gravity. this dematerialization shall be a first approach to infinity. the traveller should physically and mentally feel their action of floating in the universe.’

the walls of axiom’s habitation module are dotted with hundreds of color-changing nano-LEDs that continue travelers’ view to the universe through large windows. the interior lighting of the ‘egg’ will also respond to the mood and biorhythm of its inhabitant.

axiom flights to the ISS will begin in 2020. missions go to an altitude of 250 miles and provide a continuous 7 to 10 days in microgravity. at this altitude, duration and 51.6 degree inclination, space tourists will have views of nearly the entire planet not once but twice.
