pharrell williams and G-Star turn ocean plastic into fashion collection
in collaboration with pharrell williams, G-Star reveals the ‘RAW for the oceans‘ collection made from bionic yarn: an eco-thread of fibers derived from recycled plastic bottles. the autumn/winter 2014 series is at the forefront of sustainable fashion, comprising of men’s and women-wear to support the ecological issue of ocean waste. using the technology to not only retrieve plastic from the oceans, but transform it into a new generation of denim, the initiative by G-Star collected and innovated more than 10 tonnes of the problematic sea plastic.

jeans, t-shirts, sweats and caps are a few of the wearables included in the line, all constructed and woven from the innovative bionic yarn. the collection takes on shades of indigo blue and black, some printed with the initiative’s mascot, ‘otto’ the octopus, who morphs his organic form into classic prints like houndstooth.
the denim line
the collection has been in in partnership with bionic yarn, the vortex project and parley for the oceans. pharrell williams describes that ‘working with g-star was an obvious choice, because they have a legacy of pushing the boundaries of fashion and denim forward. bionic yarn is a company built around performance, and denim is the perfect category to show the world what bionic yarn can do. everyone has jeans in their closet.’
