the ‘north gate salon’ is a small, bright shop in yeonhee-dong, south korea by nordic bros. design community. the shop, which is tiny–first floor 13m2, second floor 7m2, veranda 8m2–was a welcome challenge that resulted in a pleasant, concise design. however, the project was further stifled by strict local building codes. nordic bros. DC were not allowed to physically alter the building unless deemed as a ‘repair’. instead, all the focus was put on the interior. easily accessible–and retractable–stairs separate storage and selling space, and a convenient toilet sits next to the entrance. upstairs, there is also a small working area and veranda. bright yellow and black intermingle, featuring multiple repetitions of a distinct pointed ‘house’ shape. the design creates a welcoming and cozy space, well suited to counter limitations and inconveniences of the structure.
