happy festive holidays from designboom!
our best wishes for a joyful 2021.
every year, newburgh — a scottish town with just over 2,000 residents — enlists its youngest inhabitants to design the town’s street lighting. translated from primary school children drawings, the resulting lights are delightful, joyful and enhance the festive feeling following one of the most challenging years we have ever faced.

for the past twenty years, newburgh has been displaying the talent of its young citizens by selecting one student to, literally, light up their imagination. this year the lighting pieces include a happy and smiley reindeer, a penguin wearing a santa hat, a festive turkey and an angel fairy. all of them showcase an honest drawing hand full of creative freedom of the student.
on it’s 19th edition, this tradition is so embeded on newburgh’s inhabitants that they don’t even know how it began. ‘it might have been there was a teacher from the local school on the committee that year, but no one remembers,’ shona gray, head of newburgh action group, who organizes the lights told BBC scotland. once the winning proposal is chosen, the artworks are sent to blachere illumination who converts them into the massive lighting objects.
