combining a chair and an ottoman, south african interior and product designer nawaaz saldulker has up-cycled furniture pieces to create the ‘chairman’. the new design is intended for use in both inside and outside environments. the project reinterprets the concept of packaging waste into something valuable, as opposed to an ecological difficulty.

‘I want to see a future where objects are not thrown away, but live different lives.’ says nawaaz saldulker.

to achieve this a recycled backrest was inserted into a mild steel frame. extruded strips made from 100% plastic waste were transformed into a weaved african basket that provides a high-level of rigidity. the ‘chairman’ features a pull-out side flap that can be used as a table. recently, the product featured as part of a selection of projects at espace commines, in the le marais district as a contribution to paris design week. the exhibition explored instances where graphic and object design converge.
