montblanc augmented paper allows you to write on traditional paper yet access your handwritten notes via your mobile device as well. encased within a black leather case, pleasing to the touch and of fine quality, crafted at the maison’s own pelletteria in florence, augmented paper uses an adapted montblanc starwalker ballpoint writing instrument.

‘pulcina’ espresso maker by michele de lucchi for alessi

designboom played around with montblanc’s augmented paper: a simple sketch of the classic alessi espresso maker by michele de lucchi was done on paper and automatically it was converted from scribbles into a digital facsimile on screen. as seen in the video, montblanc’s augmented paper allows you to see the drawing process, seamlessly translating every trace and detail. then the splitting function allowed us to see the drawing development, backward and forward, reflecting the thought process behind a design project.

first, we’ve paired with the montblanc augmented paper app — montblanc hub — available on both iOS and android, and then we’ve just switched the device on and started writing and sketching. while we did so, the electric slate underneath the paper recorded all the strokes of the pen. then we’ve pressed the button to record all writing and sketches with the digitizer enclosed in the leather envelope and transmitted our creation instantly to the app via low-energy bluetooth.

the notebook and pen use electromagnetic resonance (EMR) senses to digitize the writing and doodling made on the pad. you can export those notes and annotations as text, PDF, JPG, PNG, WILL, pages or word files to be edited by yourself and worked on later or by others.

the handy part is once transferred the augmented paper can also convert the notes to searchable text. montblanc claims the augmented paper offers handwriting recognition in 12 languages including english, german, russian, spanish, italian and chinese. for best results your handwriting should be nice and neat if you want the conversions to be super accurate. the rechargeable battery life gives up to eight hours of use, and even if you’re not connected to the internet or aren’t plugged into an electric socket, its memory can store up to 100 pages before it’s full and needs to be transferred to your digital device.
