designboom had the chance to speak to london-based designer benjamin hubert about ‘membrane’, his latest project for classicon during salone del mobile 2013. drawing reference from the studio’s material driven and process led approach, the lounge chair is comprised of a lightweight steel and aluminum framework with a stretched 3D woven textile mesh – weighing only 3kg. the furniture piece concentrates on tent construction methods and sports product research with a focus on space frames and stretched textiles.

‘membrane’ utilizes a CNC-shaped stainless steel and aluminum frame to describe the form of the seat. the construction is then wrapped in a three-dimensionally woven fabric commonly found in the sporting goods industry with integrated padding. the cover is then secured to the framework with a series of zips and fastenings. the combination of metal frame and padded textile allows ‘membrane’ to use a minimal amountof polyurethane foam – a conventional armchair would be covered almost entirely with foam – therefore reducing the carbon footprint of this type of product.
