‘chocoral’ bites by Melissa Pérez Puga

Mexico-based industrial designer Melissa Pérez Puga takes inspiration from the marine world to design her latest project dubbed ‘Chocoral’. The chocolate pieces particularly borrow the intricate shapes and textures characteristic of coral reefs, resulting in whimsical dessert bites.

The process of making chocolate is pretty similar to the process of non-edible materials, Chocoral aims to create new shapes and textures that are not found in normal chocolates to improve the experience and the fun of eating it,’ explains Puga. In addition to the chocolate balls, the designer completed a colorful packaging that nods to the blue-toned palette of marine habitats.

More specifically, Puga (see more here) created three variations of the ‘Chocoral’ packaging, with the outer layer kept transparent and the main box coated in a certain shade of blue alluding to ocean water as well as the percentage of cocoa in each chocolate box (30%, 50%, and 70%). ‘Chocoral not only aims to create something different and fun but also to create awareness around the corals and to show how beautiful and different these species are,’ notes the designer. Each chocolate piece was shaped using 3D-printed silicone molds.
