the influence of the sea

the waves of the sea have inspired designers and creatives for decades, just like the high-end furniture brand montana furniture whose new chair collection draws its influence from the currents of the water. meet marée, a series of seats made of 100% recycled plastic.

the collection owes its design to danish designer jens martin skibsted. ‘the world needs more sustainable chairs,’ says skibsted. he infuses his philosophy into the characteristics of marée where, aside from being crafted from 100% recycled plastic, his refined and rational approach to design manifests in the straight lines and lack of superfluous details of the seats. originally inspired by the movement of the tide creating the distinctive wave-shaped sand grooves, skibsted believes this shape provides both structural strength and an aesthetic element. it took him five years to develop marée from idea to final product, a testament to his dedication in finding the ideal seating comfort and mastering the complexity of the upholstering due to the cut-out in the back.

the gift of the sea

the soft edges of the chair reminisce the gentle laps of the waves, an invitation to sit down by the sea, laze about, and watch the horizon shift from sunrise to sunset. the lines sprawled across the design create a fading look to circle back to the disappearing traces on the sand once the tides wash over the shore. marée is complemented by the eight curated colors from the montana palette such as oat, mushroom, amber, beetroot, flint, parsley, anthracite, and black. its legs boast chrome and lacquered finishes to add sophistication to its elements. as the colors bring a contrasting softness to the chair, skibsted states: ‘I love what the colors are adding to the design, making the chair a natural part of the montana family.’

sustainability at its core

marée can be upholstered in fabric or leather. it has achieved the EU ecolabel certification, after meeting the requirements of EN16139 L1 for general use, testing the chair within strength, durability, and stability, including EN1021. the marée chair is available as a shell chair, with seat-only upholstery, inside upholstery, and full upholstery, making it suitable for both private homes, hospitality, and meeting areas.
