DHaus’ D*Table is a fully functioning 3D puzzle that translates its form into a flexible and adaptable low table and coffee table. Its initial cube-like form can be transformed into a triangle, expressing clean lines, flexible geometries, and long sweeping movements that create a sense of energy that invites the user to interact with it. Designed in Paris and inspired by mathematics, D*Table is, according to the father-son duo, ‘a story of a 100 year old magical formula that hid in the maths world for over 80 years before being cross-pollinated into the design world.’ 

 

This year DHaus will present these two new prototypes at Paris Design Week, running from 5th to 14th September, 2024. The Deco HACK, a completely hacked-into version of the basic flatpack table spotlights just how much potential the adaptable table holds — integrated with a vinyl player, Bluetooth speaker, wireless charger, alarm clock, and bottle opener. The Deco GREEN GOBLIN, with a speckled top, is the team’s first experiment with recycled plastic materials made by Surface Matter.

dhaus presents hack and green goblin at paris design week

 

Created by architect David Ben-Grunberg and his artist father Maty Grunberg, the D*Table is the result of the studio’s experiments which began in 1986 when Maty first stumbled upon Henry Ernest Dudeney’s mathematical formula. In 1903 the English mathematician worked out how to turn a perfect square into a perfect equilateral triangle by dissecting the square into four distinct shapes which can be rearranged to form a triangle.

 

Drawing on this, the tables’ functions literally unfold as they are opened. Celebrated as the centrepiece of a room or equally suited to sitting along a wall or in the corner of a room, the D*Table is great as a storage box when in square formation. There are eight positions from square to triangle, allowing various configurations. ‘It’s a playful piece and very adaptive, perfect for different events or spaces, and you can also use each table as a stand-alone piece, as each part can be manually detached with removable hinges,’ says the team at DHaus.

Due to the complexities of the table design, the first DHaus D*Table produced was high end and sold as a fully assembled piece that was manufactured in Denmark. The new D*Table Deco, designed in Paris, is essentially a low-cost flat pack version of its predecessor, making the product more accessible. These are the first prototypes in a new generation of the lines which the team hopes to manufacture with customizable surfaces and finishes. To enable simple transportation, each element of DTable can be manually detached using the simple hinge solution unique to each unit.

 

The table was designed in Paris but prototyped in London by Base Models. DHaus is opening a design studio in Paris, which will be more focused on design, furniture, art, interiors, and lighting, but with its core principle of experimentation.
