Cono di Luce marries Lodes’ technical skill with Arad’s creativity
Lodes collaborates with Ron Arad to exhibit the striped Cono di Luce lamp at Milan Design Week 2023. The piece marries the lighting expert’s technical know-how with the designer’s industrial artistic flair. The end product – a slender, truncated cone shape and a light source placed on top – the Cono di Luce turns heads of Fuorisalone attendees and beyond.

Continuous exchange between artist and manufacturer
Lodes, the Venice-based decorative lighting manufacturers, saw in Ron Arad, the Israeli-born artist, a figure with a disruptive approach to art and design. Arad’s bold experimentation led to the creation of the Cono di Luce lamp. Throughout the design process, Lodes and Arad continuously exchanged, with the manufacturers finding technical solutions to the artist’s intuitive designs. The realized lamp is characterized by a transparent Pyrex cone that houses PCB technology to create the frame and a graphic motif.

Cono di Luce’s moiré style
‘When you look at it (Cono di Luce), you understand, you know, what you’re looking at. There’s a page locked in the glass cone. However, this page is providing light through the cone and becomes sort of glowing in itself. There are lines which create a moiré,’ describes the designer Ron Arad.
Lodes’ intuition was to exploit the decorative potential of the material’s translucency, while Arad played with areas of dark and light bands to give overlapping stripes. Lodes employed an electrical circuit of over 200 LED chips to Cono di luce. The resulting lamp, available in red, gray and gold, is powerful and versatile, demonstrating very high quality collaboration between the design and manufacturing experts.
