‘light=weight lamp’ by junji kawabe

light has become such an ordinary existence to us with a simple flick of a switch. it has no taste, has no smell, and has no texture. weightless as it may seem, the ‘weight’ of indirect matters and consequences always exist: resources and material consumed, lives of people risked to extract these resources, by-products released to environment.

conceived by malaysian designer junji kawabe, the piece is constructed with a simple spring loaded mechanism to enable the adjustment of its brightness. the lamp reacts when lifted – illuminating when a mass of an object placed on top; the heavier the object, the brighter the light will be.
