designboom has received images from london-based designers leslie borg and anita silva, where they have conceived ‘_scape’,
an audible interactive onboard experience for icelandair.
by gathering a collection of icelandic related sensory elements packaged into
a tactile, soft, organic shape, users on a flight are able break away from the confinement of their seat and embark on an imaginary journey.
based of an exact replica of a rock picked up in iceland, the shape functions as a book with numerous layers to explore. sounds, visuals,
textures, scents and tastes aim to trigger the passenger’s imagination by promoting evocative gestures through the object.
by contrasting the straight lines of the minimal interior of an airplane cabin, the form is expressed to appear wild and untamed.
depending on how it is held, the body changes from black to white, representing lava rock and ice, two dominant features found
within the icelandic landscape. the interior is partly made of arctic wool, a delicate fabric that will, like nature, disintegrate if handled extensively. through further exploration of the object, the user will discover a vibrating removable speaker that can be plugged into the jack. the ‘_scape’ can alternately be used as headphones based on configuration preferences, resulting in a ‘sound-pillow’.

discovering new smells of ‘_scape’
‘_scape’ proposes to preserve the rare moment in which air-travel forces its passengers to become disconnected from reality and to
utilize this time to connect with their own person entertainment system. it functions as a distraction from boredom and anxieties as
well as a platform for passengers to reflect, broaden and become aware of their sensory perceptions. its aim, in the long run,
is to revise the commercial flight from being simply a mode of transport and restoring it to a sentimental, memorable experience.
