when it comes to shapes and forms, laokoon design imagines works that demonstrate their own personality. you affect the material a certain way and it responds by taking on an organic and bio-morphological geometry that pleases the eye and stimulates creativity and imagination. all artificial forces that impact the product evolve into curves and waves as they converge into a certain dynamic harmony and serenity. this is the remarkable source of the immense inner strength that can be observed in the ‘enso lamp’, a piece that was presented at budapest design week 2014.

the lighting system is a composition of technology, material science and organic forms. its construction originates in traditional, handcrafted sewing and weaving techniques, but combines them with contemporary methods and components. this fuels the company’s curiosity, as they are constantly experimenting with high-quality plastics for their extraordinary flexibility, stress tolerance, and wide range of colors.

zsuzsanna szentirmai-joly, the studio’s tapestry designer, believes that, ‘at present the modern world tends to follow minimalist ideas; everybody seems to simplify and purify. instead, she reverses this process. ‘I see life and nature full of shapes, colors and emotions. all my designs are influenced by glamorous moments of nature, such as a dance of morning sunrays on the waves of the ocean, or as buds transforms into blooming flowers, or the portrayal of the northern lights.  I envisage my textiles and objects to borrow energy and passion from these magnificent images. laokoon’s design will stay lush and alive as nature itself. it is to catch the eye, and stimulate one’s fantasy.’

zsolt pyka adds by saying, ‘with the ‘enso lamp’ we continue this impression. we wanted to expand laokoon’s emotional consciousness, and create a unique combination of materials and forms that balance on the edge of minimalism but still generate that tension and contradiction.’ in response,  the smooth base is cast from concrete, which already presents a heavy visual impact with its natural qualities, and this perception only deepens as it is bound with coated iron. above, the bulbous borosilicate glass houses a single light, evoking a transparent image that is enhance by a sea of undulating, malleable scales that move together as one body.
