Fully drivable LEGO technic mclaren P1 supercar sprints

F1 driver Lando Norris takes the life-size LEGO Technic McLaren P1 supercar for a spin around the Silverstone Circuit track. When the LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive team up to bring the LEGO version of the P1 to life, they mean it – and they pull it off. The fully drivable replica of the McLaren P1 supercar is made from 342,817 LEGO Technic elements and weighs around 1,220 kilos. It has fully functional steering, which may make it the first large-scale LEGO build ever capable of being steered and driven on racetracks. The design and engineering team also added an electric motor made of LEGO Technic Function batteries and an electric car battery, both of which allow the McLaren P1 to travel longer distances than any other LEGO model before it.

Twenty-three specialists worked on the LEGO Technic McLaren P1 supercar that Lando Norris drove on track. They came from the design, engineering, and building teams of the LEGO Group and McLaren Automotive, spending 8,344 hours on development and construction, which required 393 different types of LEGO Technic elements.

The effort paid off when they, along with the public, saw Lando Norris complete a lap around the Silverstone Circuit track on September 12th, 2024. For the LEGO Group, it was also a day of many milestones. This is the first time a LEGO scale build, created with McLaren Automotive, could drive around corners and complete a racetrack lap.

LEGO Technic McLaren P1 set for supercar fans

Having an F1 racing driver like Lando Norris take on the challenge of finishing a lap in a LEGO scale build is the cherry on top for both companies. LEGO fans who still want to build their own Technic McLaren P1 (but not drive it around a racetrack) have good news: there is a 1:8 scale set available for purchase at 449.99 USD.

It features 3,893 elements, including a 7-speed gearbox with dual-clutch transmission, suspension, a V8 piston engine, an adjustable rear wing, and opening dihedral doors with advanced mechanisms. These are all the details that make the set a ‘must-have’ for supercar enthusiasts and McLaren fans alike.
