land rover builds a compact yet cosy christmas cabin for santa claus

with the help of specialist danish architects LUMO, land rover have constructed a cosy christmas cabin suitable for two adults to sleep snugly in, even in north pole-like temperatures. the 3.5 m² structure folds down to fit into the 1,698-liter rear of the automotive brand’s ‘discovery sport‘ vehicle. furthermore, to complete the christmas getaway, the packed car still has space for festive decorations and accessories, such as tree ornaments and lights, as well as carrots for santa’s reindeer.

‘we wanted to create a christmas cabin for santa, in a truly land rover way,’ said helen ali, land rover vehicle package team leader. ‘the spacious and versatile discovery sport was perfect for this project. the seats can be folded flat at the push of a button from the load space, which is wide and square and there are plenty of hidden storage spaces like the area under the front cup-holders. building a cabin that utilised all these features was a lot of fun. we could have built this in one of our bigger models, but we wanted to prove just how versatile the baby of the discovery family truly is.’

LUMO constructed the structure out of sustainable materials

prior to working with LUMO, land rover engineers built a virtual model of the cabin in order to get the most from every millimeter of space available in their ‘discovery sport’. afterwards the danish architects were able to build the lodge from sustainable materials, giving it a minimal impact of the environment. resting on wooden struts that match the car’s ride height (212mm), the cabin shares several other features with the vehicle, including the optional tailgate seat on the deck, and the wide horizontal door opening. as well, the getaway structure is completed with solar chargers on its roof, with electrical appliances also capable of being connected to the car’s 12V power socket when sunlight goes.

‘anything that wears the land rover badge has to be capable and versatile, with beautiful, simple design. our cabin also had to be sustainable and easily transportable. we are used to working with VIP clients at land rover, but this was definitely one of the most unusual,’ said muhammed malik, land rover packaging engineer.
