living environments are filled with countless variables, thus creating the need for objects to be more versatile then ever before. by creating functional and visual coherency across a diverse range of settings, artifacts are able to drastically change the atmosphere of a spatial habitat. in the ‘new old divider’ kimu lab attempts to incorporate flexible elements to adapt within any situation.
foldable paper structures
the divider is a unification of two contrasting personalities and cultures. the subtly of the east and the boldness of the west are balanced through symbolic use of the paper fan and an aluminum frame structure. when the fans are collapse within the frame, the simplistic aesthetic creates a separation via void and nothing else. however, when allowed to expand into space, another statement is made. one that more closely reflects the beauty of oriental imagery while provided a degree of ornamentation. ‘new old divider’s’ transformative functions allow it to exist both minimally and decoratively, responding to the demands of any space.
