throughout his creative practice, norwegian designer kim thome finds a balance between installation and objects, intermingling a diverse selection of graphic elements and optical play within material and spaces. for the ‘future stars?’ exhibition at the aram gallery, london, thome exhibits ‘layers’ and ‘light array’, embodying his experimentation with the interplay between light and color.

the ‘layers’ collection of free standing sun screens adopt filters of various color, arranged in multiples to create a depth of chroma and a build-up of graphical elements. they comprise an interplay between glass and diffusion lighting gels; these colorful filters are traditionally used with artificial lighting to simulate a faux-environment, whereas the screens use the natural rays from the sun to highlight the opacity of the tiered gels. two, laminated 4mm glass sheets accommodate internally-arranged film gels. together the dividers work in union, as the pattern progresses across the distinct parts.

thome has created ‘light array’ as a site specific installation for the aram gallery. the installation adopts the existing grid inherent in the architecture; a plastic window has been combined with florescent tubed strip lighting and color to create a hybrid canvas. using the 9×9 grid provided, a graphic composition has been set within those parameters, resulting in a semi-opaque arrangement of vibrantly hued illumination.
