Jisu Kim’s Always Black bookshelf draws inspiration from the sliding structures commonly found in Northeast Asian comic book rental shops, known as ‘manhwabang’ in Korean. While bookshelves in ‘manhwabang’ typically use these dynamic structures for maximizing storage, Kim’s design takes a unique turn to enliven any space with a multi-sensory touch. Here, instead of focusing on additional storage, the sliding mechanism creates an intriguing experience within the resulting empty space — an evocative void reminiscent of a wintry atmosphere. Within, the designer introduces a mysterious, mystical ambiance where the chill of the outdoors is almost palpable and the simple act of opening and closing a bookshelf now offers a serene experience akin to feeling the crisp breeze in a cold, winter forest.

Designer Jisu Kim incorporates elements to convey the cold feeling of a winter forest concealed within the empty space. Cool-toned adjustable lighting and acrylic with gradient sanding along the facade set the mood, while thin steel plates, intricately cut into different patterns and reflecting the image of wood, are layered to represent the chilly atmosphere of the outdoors.

The Always Black bookshelf has been crafted from ash wood, stained with a black finish to evoke a sense of tranquility within any space it inhabits, while iron has been inserted into the center to enhance durability. The concealed handle for sliding is likewise crafted from ash wood with a black stain finish, prioritizing a comfortable grip and contours for the hand. Wheels and stoppers, produced with a 3D printer, also allow for easy sliding in both directions.
