jean-marie massaud designs tigmi for dedon as a unique piece of micro-architecture
jean-marie massaud‘s ‘tigmi’ outdoor furniture for dedon projects a certain aesthetic beauty, while at the same time offering extreme comfort and versatility. realized as both a sofa and shelter, the design is characterized by a braided canopy that results in a unique piece of micro-architecture that recalls the relaxing atmosphere of a shady pergola. hand-woven by master weavers of dedon, this upper sunshade is semi-transparent and references the form of a ‘palapa’ – an open-sided dwelling with a thatched roof, made of palm leaves. the resulting play of light and shadow that filters through this weave sets a relaxing atmosphere.

the generous wide and deep seating of the sofa accommodates multiple people, and can be transformed into a bed, allowing two people to lie comfortably. it is defined by two layers of padding: one that is thicker and coated with a special waterproof fabric that is fast drying and can be used outdoors; and another that rests on top, completed by dedon’s luxurious finishes, and can easily be removed and stored.

‘tigmi’ formally expresses what it means by formal definition — which in berber is both ‘home’ and ‘shadow’ — representing a hybrid sofa-shelter, that considers comfort, intimacy and practicality. it is considered one of the most comfortable outdoor furniture pieces ever produced by dedon, and its addition to the german company’s portfolio, further pushes dedon’s yearning to change the way we experience life in the outdoors.
