koers + mulder envision a pond full of ink for sieb posthuma exhibition

the exhibition on the work of the dutch artist, illustrator, and writer sieb posthuma called ‘a pond full of ink’ was compiled and designed by ira koers and roelof mulder. the collaboration transformed the two rooms of the gallery space in the letterkundig museum in the hague for a large-scale presentation of 240 small and exquisite drawings.

partitioning walls have been constructed in front of the original structure, with openings and built-in lighting for presenting blowups, photographs, and playful objects for children. specially-designed furniture for reading aloud has been placed in the middle of the rooms, with all of posthuma’s illustrated books embedded in the decor, waiting to be read.

all the surfaces are covered with prints

in front of the long haul with doorways, nine cabinets have been inventively placed between the columns. each container has its own entrance and is also connected its relatives by an enfilade. the height of the openings has been lowered to 140 cm, thus allowing young visitors to take an alternative route through the interior that is not accessible by adults. this makes the architecture itself one of the many adventurous features of the display.

the creation for each furnishing was influenced by a book or theme from the artist’s work. all of the walls and floors are covered with prints of illustrations, characters, and examples of the aesthetic techniques used by posthuma. the graphics are emphasized by accompanying quotations and captions that serve as a backdrop for original, framed creations.
