THE HERMÈS INSTALLATION IN MILAN’S LA PELOTA
Hermès presents its new home collections during milan design week 2021 inside la pelota jai alai, an indoor sports center in the heart of brera. transformed into a ‘village’ of monolithic chambers, the space immerses visitors in the french brand‘s universe and latest creations. the five architectural volumes are each wrapped in unique, colorful graphic patterns, while they all rest on a bed of terracotta-hued sand.
the new home collections exhibited inside play on raw and natural materials, incorporating unique fields of know-how. through the materials’ intrinsic characteristics, they determine the shape of a line, a type of motif, a creation. among the pieces on view is the ‘sillage d’Hermès’, an organically shaped, generously proportioned seat with distant origins, designed by studio mumbai.all images by maxime verret, unless stated otherwise
objects of connection at milan design week
within this immersive setting designed by charlotte macaux perelman, Hermès introduces visitors of milan design week 2021 to its latest creations. oscillating between tradition and innovation, the collections on view demonstrate unique know-how – a fundamental part in the creative process – developed by working with leather, textiles, metals and stone. the new collections embrace the simplicity of an elegance that gives way to refinement and comfort.
the objects are designed as connections between materials, ranging from paper microfibres, to white cashmere felt and chiselled stone. the artisan’s meticulous designs and the magic of fire-based arts constantly evoke the hand that has shaped them to experience.
the new collections on view include ‘sillage d’Hermès’, the organically shaped seat designed by studio mumbai with a wooden frame and wrapped in a blend made from cellulose microfibres. striking a harmonious balance between innovative materials and age-old know-how, this totemic chair is hand-varnished and hand-painted, line after line, offering an intimate relationship with the material. meanwhile, the brand’s ‘sialk’ table centrepieces, crafted from copper foil and colored with stencilled enamels, present a real technical achievement. several applications and firings are needed to create these unique pieces, which express a rich array of textures and contrasts after firing in a subtle balance between fused pigments and the rawness of the materials. other items featured include leather and wicker baskets, hand-woven plaids, and lacquered, hand-painted boxes.
