at the 2018 edition of milan design week, italian architect stefano boeri unveiled a door handle named ‘DUE’. conceived as a small piece of architecture, boeri’s design takes the form of an ‘archetypal handle’ that serves as a bridge between the human body, industrial design, and architecture. the product was designed for dnd, an italian door handle company celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2018.
the door handle is named ‘DUE’
to mark the occasion, dnd’s newly appointed artistic director, giulio iacchetti, tasked five italian architects — (previously featured on designboom here) — with developing door handles. stefano boeri’s design re-imagines the handle’s relationship with its attached plate, the component secured to the door. the two traditional functional parts of the object, the grip and the attachment plate, are realized as a pair of slender, perfect equal parallelepipeds.

during milan design week, an exhibition titled ‘handling architecture’ featured stefano boeri’s door handle alongside four other designs by alfonso femia, maurizio varratta, cino zucchi and 967 arch. hosted at the lualdi showroom, in the heart of the brera design district, the five products were mounted on lualdi doors selected by the architects as part of an installation by francesco librizzi. see the other designs in the gallery below.
