on a wire takes cues from modernist design

Greg Dubin combines record storage and display with On A Wire – a contraption that takes cues from pioneers in modern design, Marcel Breuer and Verner Panton. When record collections grow too quickly, collectors resort to a variety of methods to organize their new and frequently listened to records. They may stack them on the ground, lean them against the wall, or wedge them between speakers. When the designer found himself in this situation, he started looking for new storage solutions, eventually deciding to design one himself.

Through sketching and experimentation, Dubin determined that the most efficient profile was a triangle. If the profile was going to be hollow, then making it from sheet material would be wasteful, since the material cut out would be waste. Further, that shape would have several tight bends to securely hold the record, so it had to be a material that could withstand the stress of the bends. Steel wire was determined as the strongest choice.

Most options on the market, he found, were similar in form and function and took the forms of crates or standalone displays, but never both. With On A Wire, the need to organize and display records simultaneously called for the use of a repeated profile that would allow records to be displayed between chrome plated bent steel wires and, when grouped together, support a record.

‘A record stand as unique as your collection,’ as the designer says, On a Wire claims several unique traits. It is multifunctional alongside organizing and displaying records in an efficient and sculptural manner. The design that grants the record storage its functionality also gives it a uniquely modern appearance, its chrome plated wire standing out from other storage and display options on the market. On a Wire launched as a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter on April 22, 2024, with discounted options available for early backers.
