korean furniture designer choi joon woo reveals a steel edition of his previous design collection giwa. his previous works were expressed through arch-shaped steel frames, reinterpreting the image of giwa (traditional korean tiles) that were melded with some parts of the past and present furniture. through this edition the designer wanted to embody mixed images of giwa of korea’s traditional architecture in terms of forms, time and space into physical properties by contrasting heaviness with lightness, thickness with thinness, symmetry with asymmetry, and roughness with softness.

giwa eclipse lighting
giwa eclipse lighting by choi joon woo is expressive of the scenery of a solar eclipse over giwa roof tiles. as the moon gets between earth and the sun casting different shadows over earth with time, the designer wanted people to experience similar feelings of the temperature and intensity change of lighting by manually adjusting the distance between the plate and the light. its post and giwa-reminding c-shaped frame combined with the lighting shadow when viewed from the front displays the image of a traditional korean candlestick.
