fusing biomorphic forms with artificial elements
In his new AI-generated visual explorations, Filippo Nassetti fuses natural and artificial elements to create a surreal collection of biomorphic eyewear. Using text-to-image tool Midjourney, the pieces are composed by diverse natural forms, drawing from the patterns and textures found in biological and mineral microstructures, fibrous architectures, biorock accretion, ferrofluids, corroded metal, and more.
Synthesizing these elements for disctinctive compositions, some of the pieces suggest stylish eyewear that could be worn every day while others reveal themselves as more sculptural experimental renderings of mask.

filippo nassetti explores imaginative concepts with ai tools
Filippo Nassetti’s new AI Eyewear series follows from his ongoing research on headwear, masks, and eyewear. While much of his previous work has focused on developing ideas into actual products, the new series is a pure, playful exploration of concepts and the creative potential of AI design tool Midjourney.
The designer notes that the emergence of such tools has widely expanded designers’ conceptual processes, not only in terms of their imagination, but also their productivity, speeds and final outputs. ‘The challenge I see for the future, will be how to match such velocity with the workflows of design development, from 3d modelling to the production and refinement of prototypes,’ he comments.

Further, Nassetti notes that while there is certainly a disconnect between some of his surreal conceptual designs and the functionality and technical production processes of eyewear products, this gap can be used as a way to unearth new ideas and creative practices. ‘For instance, in eyewear design, a distinction between lenses and frame is generally axiomatic: you start the design by thinking them as separate. AI productions instead blur the boundaries, patterns appear that beautifully merge parts in a continuous whole. Instead of reading it as a mistake, this can be taken as a starting point for a radical re-thinking of the product,’ comments the designer.
