FOLIA by federico stefanovich is inspired by plants, seeds & fungi

AGO Projects, the collectible design gallery based in Mexico City, has launched the FOLIA summer exhibition, featuring sculptural luminaires by the young and emerging designer Federico Stefanovich. Each piece in this collection has been meticulously handcrafted using three main materials: solid wood, brass, and cast bronze. The inspiration comes from organic and geometric forms found in Mexico’s flora. Based on intricate shapes and patterns typical of plants, seeds, and fungi, each composition unfolds from a body or structure similar to a stem, which connects with one or more shades that, in turn, emulate different forms of foliage.

combining bronze casting, wood carving, and metalworking

For the FOLIA collection, Federico Stefanovich focused on the organic design process and its relationship with the materials. Each lighting piece within the exhibition derives from a careful process of conceptualization and digital prototyping by the designer, which is then translated by a technical team specializing in three artisanal processes: bronze casting, wood carving, and metalworking. As a result, the luminaires present unique details that, far from being imperfections, are kept evident and celebrated. Hidden inside of them is a light source, carefully positioned to refract on polished brass surfaces, creating a warm, soft, and indirect lighting effect that further highlights the sculptural aesthetic character of the collection.

balance, minimalism, and play at ago projects

Balance is also a crucial aspect of the FOLIA collection at the AGO Projects gallery. Each luminaire is carefully calculated to distribute weights, ensuring stability and visual harmony. This thoughtful approach not only enhances functionality but also elevates the aesthetic and playful appeal, provoking the user’s surprise as they interact with the minimalist design gestures and raw materials used by Federico Stefanovich to make the pieces. The FOLIA exhibition is running until September 1st, 2024.
