Repurposing discarded bike parts

Once, Engineer and content creator Sergii Gordieiev splits the back wheel of his previous bike design in half to create a one-of-a-kind, fully functional ride. Now, he chucks aside the round-shaped tires of a usual bicycle and opts for square-framed wheels in what he calls one of the craziest projects he and his team have ever built. Most of the materials the team recycles are from discarded parts of other bikes in their workshop.

From afar, hesitation might dawn on the viewer. Would the bike work with the giant-looking square wheels? For Gordieiev, and knowing that he’s already made the cut-in-half wheel work, the answer is a solid yes. In a video demo he released on April 9th, 2023, Gordieiev unravels to the public how he managed to bring out the magic in a pair of square wheels for his custom bike.

Custom bike with square wheels works!

Sergii Gordieiev starts by creating the frame for the square wheels. He grabs a slab of what might be steel and cuts it into portions. He welds them together to form a square shape, always infusing his precision as he thoroughly sizes up the divisions and placement of the screws (after all, he is an engineer). When he’s through with the frames, he begins drilling holes in the frame to inject the rods that will anchor the bike’s chain ring.

As soon as Gordieiev inserts the rods in their dedicated holes, he attaches the chainrings that allow the bike’s square wheels to function well. He adds rollable wheels between the chainrings to enable the chain to rotate with ease. On the exterior of the wheels, he sprawls rectangular chains wrapped in tire rubber from a discarded bicycle sitting in the design team’s workshop. Once he screws in the final touches, Gordieiev makes final tests by wheeling in the fruit of his labor and attaching the square wheels onto his custom bike.

‘Lots of attention guaranteed’

Gordieiev goes out of his workshop and into the park to try out his fully functional, custom bike with square wheels. As seen in the video, the bike can weather the pavement as it smoothly wheels into the asphalt path. The continuous whirring sound that the engineer’s mechanism makes may recall factory production on full blast. Glazing at the bike, the total load might be a bit bulky considering the steel used in the square wheels’ frame, but the lightweight-looking body of the bike may spike it down to a notch.

‘Please meet almost normal bicycle but with one modification – square wheels! This concept is fully working and you can ride and make turns. Lots of attention guaranteed,’ says Gordieiev and his team in the video demo. By the looks of it, not only will the custom bike with square wheels lure in attention, but compel the onlookers to hop on it and ride away (if they manage to get on the spot first in the sea of clamoring fans).
