update (01/01/2018): SOLD OUT – elon musk has sold its 20,000th (and final) ‘the boring company’ branded flamethrower. musk officially put the flamethrowers on sale saturday evening for $500 a piece. this means they’ve made an upwards of $10 million in around 100 hours.

elon musk flamethrower preorders surpassed $3.5 million in sales in their first 24 hours. when multi-billionaire founder of electric car company tesla teased that ‘the boring company’ would start selling a real flamethrower, many assumed he was just kidding. well he wasn’t and now the tunnel-digging company is taking pre-orders for the weapon – priced at $500. musk orginally promised the flamethrower to consumers if the company sold 50,000 caps, as stated on his twitter account.

musk has already taken 7,000 pre-orders in a total of 20,000 flamethrowers that are up for grabs, meaning he’s close to making $4 million. shipping is expected to start in spring but to keep them excited, the boring company has given customers a peek of what to expect with a demo video.

the boring company was founded in 2016, after elon musk mentioned the idea of making tunnels on his twitter account. copy on the product page reads, ‘may not be used on boring company decorative lacquered hay bales or boring company dockside munitions warehouses‘. in amongst updating consumers on his pre-order sales figures, musk spent a little time playing with the idea of a zombie apocalypse in a sort of spontaneous advertising attempt…before shortly denying the claims.

the boring company CEO has also stated that the flamethrower is within the legal limits permitted by the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, and firearms, as it produces a flame no more than 10 feet long. to keep things safe, the boring company is also giving buyers the option of a company-branded fire extinguisher. both can be pre-ordered here.

update: in a statement published on twitter by los angeles times report liam dillon, california assemblyman miguel santiago (d-los Angeles) said he intends to introduce legislation that would prevent musk’s company from selling the flamethrower to the public, at least in the state of california. stay tuned to see what happens.
