Dmitri Tcherbadji’s Sugar-Lens Gingerbread Instax Square
Vancouver-based photographer Dmitri Tcherbadji, the founder of Analog Cafe, recently created a custom edible film camera by covering it with baked gingerbread cookies and icing. Even with the gingerbread and icing exterior, the device can still shoot and print Instax Square photos. Its lens is also topped with sugar candy, which creates a hazy, nostalgic effect reminiscent of dreamy polaroid filters.
Once the photographer is finished capturing images using the custom edible film camera, they can slowly peel off and crack the gingerbread cookies to munch on as snacks when hunger strikes. They can also lick off the icing like ice cream and thaw the sugar candy lens in their mouth like a delectable dessert. Afterward, they can pocket the Instax Square photos the device printed out and keep the camera’s body for their next shooting adventure.

Edible film camera prints instax square photos
Dmitri Tcherbadji knows that the sample Instax Square photos may appear ‘blurrier than a sloppy pinhole’ due to the sugar candy lens he adds to his edible film camera wrapped in gingerbread cookies. While he admits that sugar might not be an ideal or easy material to make a lens from, the resulting images may appeal to those whose visual aesthetics align with the film camera’s aesthetic. Even without the gingerbread cookies adorning the film camera’s body, the device still functions and can be used as a handheld and indoor camera thanks to its large aperture.
